After using her lunch money to buy a Robin costume, she took to the streets, redefining the silhouette and spirit of the Caped Crusaders forever! In fact, she actually sought out Batman and the role of Robin after the cranky hero saved her from a Mutant attack. She wasn't a lonesome child who needed looking after. Created by Frank Miller, Carrie upset the idea of what a sidekick should and could be. The first was a young orphan called Dick Grayson, the second was a troubled boy named Jason Todd, and though you may think that the third was Tim Drake, it was actually a 13-year-old girl known as Carrie Kelley who first appeared in the pages of 1986's Bat-Smash, The Dark Knight Returns #1. Later, in Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again (2001), Carrie adopts the identity of Catgirl.Many have worn the mantle of Robin. Though non-canonical, Carrie was the first female Robin, preceding Stephanie Brown, although Julie Madison had passed off as Robin for a brief time in a Bob Kane story published in Detective Comics #49 (March 1941). The leader nearly kills Batman, but is narrowly defeated by the battered caped crusader. Carrie then attends to him while on the way back to the Batcave and then he fully accepts her as the new Robin. When she and Batman find the City Dump lair of ruthless street gang The Mutants, Batman and the Mutant Leader engage in hand-to-hand combat. In the story, Jason Todd's death during his time as Robin was the reason behind Batman's retirement and when Carrie becomes the new Robin after saving his life, Bruce threatens to fire her on multiple occasions for disobeying orders, but since she shows immense talent, he allows her to stay. They are very neglectful of her, and through their dialogue are hinted to have been activists and yippies during the 1960s, but now have become apathetic stoners. In a major difference to the two previous Robins, Carrie does indeed have parents, but they aren't seen much.
